Background of the study

Library systems are essential repositories of cultural knowledge, preserving historical records, literature, and artistic expressions that shape community identity. In Kano State, public and academic libraries play a crucial role in safeguarding indigenous literature, archival materials, and oral histories. These institutions serve as centers for learning and cultural exchange, enabling communities to access and preserve their cultural heritage. Libraries not only facilitate education but also support cultural research and community engagement through exhibitions, storytelling sessions, and literacy programs. With the advent of digital technology, many libraries in Kano State are undergoing transformation to include digital archives and online resources, broadening access to cultural materials. However, challenges such as limited funding, outdated infrastructure, and low public engagement threaten the effectiveness of library systems in preserving cultural heritage. This study investigates the role of library systems in cultural preservation in Kano State, evaluating their impact on cultural identity, educational advancement, and community cohesion (Abdullahi, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem

Despite the critical role of libraries in cultural preservation, many library systems in Kano State face challenges that undermine their effectiveness. Insufficient funding, inadequate infrastructure, and low levels of community participation hinder the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. This gap between the potential and actual performance of library systems necessitates an in-depth evaluation of their role in sustaining cultural identity and promoting educational access.

Objectives of the Study

To evaluate the role of library systems in preserving cultural heritage in Kano State.

To identify challenges that limit the effectiveness of libraries.

To recommend strategies for enhancing library services and cultural preservation.

Research questions

How do library systems contribute to cultural preservation in Kano State?

What challenges affect the performance of libraries in this regard?

What measures can improve the role of libraries in cultural preservation?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it highlights the importance of libraries in safeguarding cultural heritage. The findings will guide policymakers and library administrators in developing strategies to enhance resource access, modernize infrastructure, and boost community engagement, thereby strengthening cultural preservation efforts in Kano State (Abdullahi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

This study is limited to library systems in Kano State and focuses on their role in cultural preservation. It excludes private collections and non-library institutions. Limitations include potential data collection biases and varying levels of library resources.
